THE Derwent Valley Federation opened the 2010 old bird season from Leyland on Saturday with conditions perfect on the day.

The West Cumberland Federation had liberated from Leyland an hour and a quarter beforehand and had a quicker race than the one experienced later by the Derwent Valley fanciers.

Returns seemed to be mixed, too, with several reports of birds arriving home in an edgy state as if they had been spooked en-route by a hawk attack.

The Derwent Valley birds will be back at Leyland on Saturday.

Flimby West Coast Flying Club is holding what appears to be a mouth-watering squeaker sale on Sunday at the Princess Royal, Flimby. The birds will be in the pens at 1pm for the sale an hour later.
 
Mark Hodgson of E. Hodgson and son, who won the Derwent Valley Federation’s Big Cup again last year has now switched from Flimby HS to Flimby West Coast. He will have a youngster in the sale, as well as Joe Hine, son and grandson who were runners-up for the Federation Big Cup.
 
There are also quite a number of top birds to be auctioned from fanciers north of the border with several from lofts who have been successful in the Scottish National races.
 
These include Roy Seaton, Mr and Mrs Power, Gordon ‘Lofty’ Grant, Mr and Mrs Chris Little, Scott Irving, Emil McCarten, Stuart McCarten and Jim McCarten, as well as leading Blackpool fancier Tony Devalle.
 
The Flimby West Coast club will be offering a prize of £50 for the young bird, bought at the sale, which puts up the best performance.
