DERWENT Valley Federation fanciers were back at Leyland on Saturday for a second successive week.

It looked for a while as though the birds would have to be held until Sunday as the weather had been poor throughout the day.

But the decision was taken to release the birds at 3-45pm along with the West Cumberland Federation birds – and a good race developed.

There were a few lofts who lost pigeons, but in the main these were fanciers who had been troubled by the young bird sickness earlier in the season and hadn’t been to every race.

The young birds are at the halfway point in the programme on Saturday when they get to 100 miles at Appleton.

The West Cumberland Federation needed a good race after their early season problems. The first two were cancelled and the third was a poor one from Garstang.

Returns were much better on Saturday following the joint liberation and with both organisations at Appleton this week-nd it makes sense to go up together again.
