THE Derwent Valley Federation opened their 2008 programme from Leyland on April 5 but a number of fanciers did not send.
A bad weather forecast and limited training opportunities saw several lofts keep their birds at home.
On the day, however, visibility was excellent and although the birds had to contend with a cold, north-east wind they generally coped well.

The Derwent Valley Federation raced from Leyland again on Saturday, April 12 but had to wait a little longer for the liberation.
Up in good conditions a week earlier at 10-30am, the race-point was clouded over for the second 70-mile sprint and it was 1-10pm when the birds got away.
But they covered the miles in good time and returns, generally, were very good again.
The West Cumberland Federation were liberated a little later at 1-35pm from Leyland and they also had a good race with the velocities of the leading pigeons just a little quicker than those in the Derwent Valley.
Only odd pigeons appear to have been still missing at nightfall and both organisation are looking for another good race today from a traditionally good race-point of Appleton.
The East Cumberland Federation weren’t quite as pleased with their opening race from Carnforth, although some lofts were able to report perfect returns.
The Anglo Scottish race from Brough on Sunday did have 100% returns.

Derwent Valley Federation fanciers experienced a very poor race from Appleton on Saturday, April 19. In 40 years some fanciers could not remember a bad race from Appleton, one of the safest race-popnts in the programme.
Despite it being only just under 100 miles, and normally an excellent race-point, this time it proved extremely tricky with lots of birds absent on the day.
There have been reports of Cumbrian pigeons being reported in Beverley, Hull, Blackburn, Ellesmere Port, Whitby, Hereford, Anglesey and even Dorset.
The convoy was liberated at 11-15am in a fresh to strong east wind and the leaders took over two hours to make their lofts.
The disappointing returns followed two good opening races from Leyland and now the Federation programme starts from Stafford today.
The West Cumberland Federation also raced from Appleton but they were liberated half an hour earlier. Although there were higher than expected losses, they weren’t as severe as the Derwent Valley Federation.
The West Cumberland will also be racing from Stafford today but it will not be a Federation race.
The East Cumberland had their second race from Carnforth on Saturday and the cold north east wind caused a few problems. There were a few birds missing at nightfall, but quite a number have subsequently worked their way back.
