kenny_harper_yb_3.jpgWOLLASTON has a poor reputation among west Cumbrian pigeon fanciers after a string of bad races from the Midlands liberation site.

Earlier in the season, at the old bird race from Wollaston, High Harrington fancier Kenny Harper won his club Workington Victoria but lost 16 pigeons.

On Saturday the young bird race from Wollaston produced much better returns but didn’t stop Kenny from winning again – and this time he also topped the Derwent Valley Federation.

Kenny enjoyed 100% returns, with ten out of ten, and his winner – a blue hen is the daughter of the hen that won this year’s Workington Victoria old bird race from Wollaston.

“They are off a Staf van Reet hen I got from Eddie Pape at Flimby paired to a Vandenabeele cock. I’ve been introducing the Staf van Reet breed into the loft and am starting to get a nice little family together.

“Knocks like we had at Wollaston old birds don’t help, though, and it’s been a team building exercise with the young ones. I’ve stopped 17 of them for next season and I won’t be sending the blue hen which won on Saturday.

“She was sitting ten day eggs and she would be in good trim this week-end but I am not going to change my mind. I will be keeping her at home but the other nine will go,” he says.

Kenny has won 11 Fed races, the majority old bird inland and channel, but his first victory came with the youngsters many years ago when he was first flying at Moss Bay.

He has one youngster still racing which is ear-marked for a special X-ring race from Portsmouth in a fortnight’s time, which has big money prizes.

But he doesn’t have any entered this Saturday from Cheltenham when the Keekle HS holds its Gold Ring race from Cheltenham. It carries a first prize of £1,000.

Derwent Valley fanciers who have entries must make sure their forms are submitted on Friday night to either John Osborne or Neil Buchanan of the Keekle club.
