Three in a row for bird that topped the Fed PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 22 May 2008

TransporterA five-year-old blue cock won his third race on the trot to give David Todhunter and Rodney Ismay their fourth Derwent Valley Federation triumph on Sunday.

The Busschaert, bred down from birds obtained from Alfie Fletcher of Carlisle, had won successive club races from Stafford and Wollaston.

The Federation birds were held-over until Sunday and liberated from Cheltenham at 8-00am into an east-north-east wind with the Maryport club members clocking at 12-08.

Rodney said: “He’s been a very consistent pigeon for us over the years and his father was just as good, scoring many times and winning two RPRA awards.

“We also got ninth Fed with a three-year-old blue cock who is the same way bred.”

Unlike a lot of lofts these days, Todhunter and Ismay race on the natural system and Sunday’s winner was sent sitting 11 days on eggs.

David and Rodney had flown separately in different racing partnerships before getting together in 1984. Their first Federation win was with Keith Graham in the partnership but the last three have been just the two of them.

The loft sent 15 birds to the race – got 12 on the day and the other three were back on Monday morning.

Flimby West Coast will br staging it’s show race from Marlborough this week-end and all completed forms should be with the secretary before the birds are liberated.

Next week’s race is from Fareham because the Cumbria Combine changed the programme from Portsmouth so the second show race

ill be staged then, and again completed sheets have to be with the secretary before the birds are liberated.

West Cumbria Fed members can send their entry forms via transporter to Flimby. All bird times to secretary as early as possible.

Any members who entered a bird in the £1 single bird nom must mark on entry form which bird is the nomination.

The form loft in Keekle club came up trumps at the week-end in the West Cumberland Federation race from Cheltenham.

David Buchanan and son Neil were winning their fifth race in a row, and for good measure they had also won the Cheltenham Fed race last year.

Their first bird was a blue yearling cock, and a year ago it was his full brother who won from Cheltenham which was their first success in the Federation for 12 years.

Like last year it was a holdover and this time they were liberated from Cheltenham at 8-00am with the Buchanan bird homing at 11-54am after the 195-mile flight.

Neil has been involved in the sport for close on 40 years while his father Dave has been racing pigeons for the best part of his life.

Back in 2004 Neil went over to Brugge and bought some birds for stock from an ace Belgian fancier Maurice Mattheeuws.

The hen which was the mother of the two Fed winners is one of those Mattheeuws pigeons while the sire is part Wildemeersch and part Staf van Reet.

“This latest Fed winner had a minor ticket as a young bird but hadn’t scored previously this year, although he has been very steady and consistent.

“We fly him on the widowhood system and that was how his elder brother was flown last year,” says Dave.

The loft started the season with 30 widowhood cocks and still have 22 to fly. They also have 12 hens on the widowhood system. At the week-end they sent 34 and got 30 back.

The partnership has had numerous Fed winners over the years and this is the second since they moved lofts in 1997 from the Ginns to behind the Hensingham Stadium.
