Cumbrian pigeon fanciers will be among the first in the country to get an official look at the new electronic timing system being introduced to the sport.
Unikon, one of the leading distributors of ETS, will be sending representatives to the Calder Club in Mirehouse on Friday, February 1 for a special demonstration.
The latest design is being unveiled at the Show of the Year in Blackpool this week-end, before it is being taken around the country – and Mirehouse will stage one of the first demonstrations.
The ETS display is just part of a special Pigeon Moot being put on by the West Cumberland Federation which promises to be quite a night for county fanciers.
Organiser Brian Fitzsimmons of the Cleator Moor club said: “ETS is one of the main talking points in the sport at the moment and there are some remarkable innovations.
“Apparently you can go in the house for a cup of tea and if a pigeon drops into the loft it will be timed for you and a text will be sent to your mobile telling you which bird is back.”
Funds from the Moot will go towards the fund which was set-up to purchase a new 32ft loft for John and Colin Davidson, whose Mirehouse loft was burnt down last year in an arson attack.
“We have already got the loft for John and Colin because we didn’t want to lose them from the sport. We will also be making a special donation to MacMillan Nurses who do such a wonderful job,” said Brian.
Top Lancashire fancier Gary Spavin will be coming up to head the panel for the question-and-answer session and brining three leading fliers with him.
There will also be an auction of 20 young birds – three of them off Cumbria Combine winners.
“We are holding a Moot Two Bird race from Portsmouth 2, open to the Cumbria Combine and we are hoping that people who attend will take advantage and take part in the race.
“It’s £10 for two birds of their choice and all money will be paid out – 60% o the winner and 40% o the runner-up. Entry on the night for the Moot will be £4 and they will get pie and peas for that,” said Brian.
