Desperately trying to play catch-up after only six matches in the Cumberland ARL First Division, Broughton Red Rose suffered a set-back on Saturday.

They went down 24-16 at Wath Brow and although they have matches in hand over four of the fives teams above them still have to get those points on the board.

It had looked promising for Red Rose as they led 10-6 at the break but it was Hornets who finished better.

Wayne Bell, Carl Harrison and Richard Campbell scored the Broughton tries with Mark Walker adding two goals.

The Wath Brow tries came from James McClelland (2), Jamie Irving and Paul Murphy while Jason Connery put over four goals.

Meanwhile Red Rose coach Joe Stewart has moved to correct some mis-information last week that Broughton had been unable to raise a side for last week’s BARLA National Cup tie with Maryport.

We reported on Getnoticedonline.co.uk that Red Rose had conceded after the match was called-off because of a frozen pitch. Other sections of the media gave Maryport an 18-0 win indicating a walk-over because Red Rose hadn’t a team.

Stewart said: “We had a team but, as our pitch and our opponents’ pitch were both unfit we had no alternative but to postpone the fixture.

“After lengthy discussions among our coaching staff and committee it was decided that, given the backlog of local fixtures remaining (13 in the League at the time), plus local cup competitions, we felt we could not allow the already massive problem facing our League’s fixture secretary to be added to.

“With huge disappointment therefore, we informed BARLA of our positions and withdrew from the National Cup, allowing Maryport to progress. We ish them all the best in future rounds.

“If we had played Maryport and won it would have been February 18 before our next local game which illustrates the predicament we were in.

“The decision was made with great regret but we felt we had no other option other than to withdraw.”

Coincidentally Broughton are due to host Maryport now in an Iggesund CARL Division One game on Saturday.

Maryport are currently one of the teams ahead Red Rose in the table, leading them by five points but they have played four more games – so Saturday’s clash is likely to be crucial.

Maryport beat bottom side Lowca 54-24 with tries by Dean Scholey (2), Ben Waugh (2), Mark Foster (2), Jonathan Dawes, Daniel Rooney, Tony Heald and Barrie Murdock. Craig Foster booted seven goals.

Lowca never gave up and responded with tries by Lee Allen (2), Keith Campbell, Neil Halbert nsd Billy Dalton. Campbell kicked two goals.

There was a big top four battle at Hensingham where an 18-10 victory for visitors Glasson kept them in second place and the home side out of the top four in firth.

Hensingham had established a 10-0 lead at the break with tries from Jamie Sharpe and James Cartmell, with Sharpe landing a goal.

Brad Nixon, Matthew Johnson, Derek Stott and Clive Stott scored the Glasson tries in the second-half and Craig Hamilton converted one of them.

Leaders Seaton Rangers maintained their 100% record after racing into a 16-0 half-time lead against Distington.
But the home side shared the second-half scoring as it finished 26-10 and maintains Seaton’s healthy lead at the top.

Ryan Hodgson and Craig Hodgson scored Distington’s second-half tries with Clayton Sutton landing a goal. For Seaton there were tries for Brett Phillips, Ryan Blair, Paul Hopper and Andy McGlasson. Phillips kicked three goals.

Cockermouth have the lead in Division Two on points differential after they beat Flimby 48-8.

Mark Haycock crossed twice for the table-toppers and was followed over by Mark McMillin, Jamie Skillen, Stuart Pickering, Daniel Rourke, Richard Bowe and Johnny Goulding. Gareth Skillen landed five goals while McMillin put over three.

Dave Torley scored the Flimby try and Andrew Pearce kicked two goals.

Great Clifton and Frizington both continued their challenge for a top four place when they scored convincing victories.
The Lions beat Maryport A 46-4 while Frizington beat Seaton A 42-18 and are currently fourth and fifth respectively.

David Liddington scored a hat-trick of tries for Great Clifton and the other tries came from Mark Fox (2), Michael Hill, Shaun Woolfe and Steven Hopper. Hill also kicked seven goals.  Andrew Cartwright scored Maryport’s sole try.

Frizington were only leading 24-18 at half-time against Seaton A but hey ran away with it in the second-half.

Paul Bradley (2), Sean Dixon (2), Dean Armstrong, Bleu Robinson and Peter Fowler scored the Frizington tries. Wayne Burns landed five goals and Armstrong also kicked two goals.

Gareth Messenger, Tom McGeen and Nathan Dixon scored the Seaton tries, all of which were converted by Matthew Dixon.

In the other Second Division game Salterbeck A had a convincing 62-18 over Hensingham A.

There were Salterbeck hat-tricks for Andrew Prest and Ryan McClure while Connor White (2), David Watson, Barry Devlin, Simon Gilmour and David Cartner also crossed. White kicked four goals and there were on apiece from  Jason Payne, Matthew Sibbald and Alan Riddick.

Bobby Robinson (2) and Phil Anderson scored the Hensingham tries while Lee Austin landed three goals
