Cockermouth produced a top-class performance to make progress in the SJR Cumberland Cup.
The Second Division side won 21-12 at First Division Glasson Rangers, after being 12-4 behind at the break.
Gary Thwaite and Paul Upex had scored tries for Glasson which had been converted by Lee Taylor.
But it was Cockermouth who went through with tries from Liam Wild (2), Gareth Skillen and Gavin Howarth. Gareth Skillen kicked two goals and a drop goal.
That was one of only two games which survived the bad weather at the week-end in the Iggesund Cumberland Amateur Rugby League.
In the First Division Ellenborough were able to put-out a team to take-on bottom side Lowca. The former big guns couldn’t raise enough players for their game with current leaders Seaton last week.
However, there were no problems for Ellenborough on this occasion as they raced to a 46-4 victory.
Jason McMullen grabbed a hat-trick of tries while Martin Stalker and Craig Stalker scored two each while Robert Scott and David Sewell also crossed.. Scott kicked four conversions and Stephen Stoddart also potted one goal.
In the Ace Insurance National Cup first round Broughton have conceded after their match with Maryport was called-off because of a frozen pitch.
Kells have retired the number one shirt following the tragic death of Ashley McDonald and they have also pulled-out of the BARLA National Cup after they did not play their tie at Queens.
“Everyone at the club is still reeling over Ashley’s death. It’s very hard to take in. and playing rugby is the last thing on the player’s minds at the moment.”
Members of the team will act as pall bearers at Ashley’s funeral.
