SEATON produced one of their best performances of the season to reach the Cumberland Cup final.
They beat Ellenborough 5-2 in a tough, no-nonsense clash to set-up a final clash against Kells at Maryport on Friday, May 23.
Defences were on top throughout with Seaton adopting an approach of “they shall not pass” and taking their chances at the other end to squeeze through.
Two Duncan Moyle penalties against one from Stephen Stoddart gave Seaton a 4-2 lead at the break.
The only score of a fiercely competitive second-half was a drop goal from Seaton’s player coach Jon Roper.
Cockermouth were celebrating after they clinched the Division Two top four championship crown with a 32-12 win over Lowca, having already topped the League.
Yet it was Lowca who started best and took the lead on eight minutes with a try from Dean Morgan which was converted by Keith Campbell.
It didn’t take long for Cockermouth to get back on terms as Phil Bell went over for a try four minutes later and player coach Craig Fisher put over the conversion.
Cockermouth got their noses in front two minutes later when powerful centre John Patrick went over for an unconverted try.
When Liam Wild scored on 22 minutes and Patrick followed him over for his second on 33 minutes, with both tries converted by Fisher, it looked all over.
Trailing 22-6 at the break Lowca needed an early score to give themselves hope and they actually went in after only two minutes. Andrew Harper made the touchdown and Campbell again converted.
But the follow-up score just wouldn’t come and Cockermouth virtually sealed the win on 68 minutes when BARLA Great Britain Umnder-23’s hopeful Mark Haycock crossed for an unconverted try.
There was still time for a final Cockermouth try on 77 minutes from Mark McMillin which Fisher converted.
