Wath Brow got through to Tuesday night’s Carnegie Challenge Cup draw when they won a tough second round clash with East Hull 16-14 at Red Beck.
Two of the leading sides in the National Conference League’s Premier Division they served-up a tasty confrontation.
The Cumbrians had to come from 12-10 behind at the break to clinch their place in the third round draw when they have the chance of pulling professional opposition.
Full-back Ryan Amor had an outstanding game for the Hornets while scrum-half Carl Puckering was the most influential player for the visitors.
It was Wath Brow who made the best start as Mark Troughton made good yards before sending Andre Stables on his way and Jamie Devin as in support to take the final pass and score. Ryan Robb converted.
East Hull then enjoyed their best spell of the game and it was no surprise when they drew level.
Gary Blanchard ran a great angle to put Tommy Brett in for a try which Puckering converted on 24 minutes.
Five minutes later Ashley Johannessen gave the visitors the lead when he crashed in for a try and again Puckering converted.
But Wath Brow hit back well before half-time and reduced the arrears to just two points when Devine got over for his second try. Robb’s conversion attempt shaved the upright.
Wath Brow really had to dig deep at the start of he second half as East Hull put on a lot of pressure. All they could manage, however, was a Puckering penalty.
When Wath Brow managed to get a foothold at last in East Hull territory Micky McAllister was able to stretch out and score a try to put the teams level again. Robb missed with the conversion but put over a 62nd minute penalty to win the game.
It was hard and uncompromising after that as East Hull tried everything they knew but Wath Brow were equal to all that was thrown at them and held on for a spirited victory.
