y9-winners-st-benedicts1.jpgSt Benedict’s made it two out of three wins over Dowdales when they won the Year Nine final in the Carnegie Regional Champions Cup.

They dominated the game from the start and had too much pace and power for their rivals, winning 40-4

St Benedict’s were first to off the mark with just two minutes on the clock, as loose forward Jordan Burns crossed for the first of his four tries.

A 15 minute period of deadlock was to follow with defences having the better of things and it was only following some excellent handling that the next score came.

The ball was moved out wide and Luke Davidson found himself in the right place to register his first try of the evening.

The next score came just four minutes later from Burns who powered over from close range and added the conversion. Four minutes later Davidson added his second of the evening as following good passes from Joe Riley and Gregory Howland and after Callum Farrer’s half break created the space.

That left Benny’s with a comfortable 18-0 lead at the break.

The second half started well for Dowdales as the hard work from Jonny Quayle and Jonathon Henderson began to pay dividends.  Smart attacking play from Jordan Woodend created the opportunity for Harry Brown to get outside his man and race in at the corner.

Dowdales continued to defend stoutly until Burns crossed for his hat-trick try, breaching the defensive line and stepping round the fullback.  Connor Hetherington added the conversion.

Shortly after, following some more Dowdales pressure Burns crossed for his fourth as he broke from his own 30 and had the pace to go round the fullback. Joe Riley added the goal.

A further break from Burns, this  time thwarted by the fullback gave possession to for Hetherington to cross from acting half back.

Hetherington also added his second three minutes later after latching on to a neat ball from Howland,. Riley converted.

The last ten minutes of the game were spent with defences again dominating as they had for the first ten minutes.

The after match presentations were conducted by Regional Development Manager Alan Davidson and Barrow’s assistant coach Dave Clarke with St Benedict’s loose forward Jordan Burns being awarded the Carnegie Player of the Match.
