The Rugby Football League has joined forces with Workington Town and Whitehaven RL to create a partnership with Route 2 Work to give job opportunities within the sport to local people.
Routes to Work are a people based regeneration organisation supporting residents living with multiple disadvantage and disaffection into work.
Project leads Carl Harrison (RFL) and Julie Wedgwood (Routes 2 Work) were pleased to move forward with the start date on the 19th January 2009.
A three day induction was carried out for the four new starters who will now begin there six month paid training and work experience within Rugby League.
Two of the new staff ( Gordon Maudling and Robert Philip) will be working with the community development team at Whitehaven RL, headed up by John Cox and Stacey Gribbon with the other two ( Paul Martin and Martin Wilson) working with the Workington Town community team led by Community Manager Marnie Jackson.
They will be given continuous training including coaching courses, safeguarding, First Aid and much more along with being fully supported by the club, RFL and staff at Routes 2 Work to give them all the best chance of success.
The aim at the end of the six month period is that hey will have received enough training and development that they have the experience to move onto full time roles within the game.
Carl Harrison (RFL Talent Coach) said: “This is a fantastic development opportunity for these four guys and a chance for Cumbria RL to identify its future work force. This is the pilot of what I hope goes on to become a rewarding project for all involved. If only a couple of the guys move on to become full time development staff it will have been a definite success.”
A second role out of the scheme will begin with interviews on the 8th March.
If anyone is interested in being part of this work opportunity and want to find out if they would be eligible to apply for one of these jobs please contact Route 2 Work on 01900 873371 and ask to speak to Project Officer Sharron Armour.
The funding to support the development of this initiative is provided via a contract being delivered by Routes2Work on behalf of Wigan Council from the North West Regional Development Agency (NWDA) - North West Coalfield Communities Regeneration Programme initiative to Tackle Barriers to employment in hard to reach areas through the delivery of smaller grassroots interventions.
