Whitehaven take ex-Town forward on trial PDF Print E-mail

Steve Ormesher, the former Blackpool Panthers and Workington Town prop forward, has joined Whitehaven on a month’s trial.

Ormesher has only had one training session at the Recreation Ground so is not included in the Haven squad for Sunday’s trip to Batley.

Last season Ged Stokes signed Ormesher for Workington Town while he was head coach at Derwent Park and the 6ft 5ins forward settled in well, although he was sent-off on two occasions.

He had an exemplary disciplinary record in both rugby league and rugby union stretching back over ten years before he was shown the red card by Castleford referee Dave Merrick after a 35th-minute incident in the National League Two clash at York City Knights.

The touch judge went onto the pitch after York sub Neil Lowe was hit in a tackle but Ormesher claims no malice was meant in the challenge. A trainee solicitor he represented himself at the subsequent disciplinary hearing.

He had joined Town after five years with Blackpool and he had also been playing rugby union for Preston Grasshoppers and at both codes has showed his versatility by operating in a variety of positions, backs and forwards.

This season he has been operating at full-back for Orrell where for a while he played alongside Workington’s Australian prop forward Ryan Benjafield.
