WORKINGTON Town have landed another Barrow front-rower on a month’s loan.
Former Askam prop Jamie Butler, who stands 6ft 5ins and weighs in at 17 and a half stone, will be in the Workington squad for Sunday’s Co-operative Championship One game at Rochdale.
Town already have several former Barrow players in their squad with Ruairi McGoff having recently been confirmed as staying on loan for a second month.
Butler, 29, is well known to Town coaches Gary Charlton and Martin Oglanby through their times in charge of the Cumbria amateur county side.
Charlton said: “He’s a big lump of a lad with a lot of qualities which will certainly bulk up our pack and give us more options.
“He looked a very good player when we had him for Cumbria and I think he’s just a bit unfortunate that there’s so much competition for places at Barrow in the level above.
“We are looking for a big input from him, starting at Rochdale on Sunday and it’s good to have more heavyweight options for the pack.”
Chairman Dave Bowden said: “We want to increase the competition for places and it’s been well documented that we have been looking to strengthen the pack for some time now.
"Jamie is a big strong lad and that is what we need as we will need every player we've got in the squad as it is going to be a hard, competitive season.”
Hooker Jack Pedley who missed out last week in the win over York is back in the frame as Town look to build on their excellent win against the Knights.
Charlton said: “It’s very important to get some consistency into our play. We’ve been like chalk and cheese at times, and sometimes inn the same game.
“We don’t just vary week to week, but during a game and the main thing we are looking at is consistency for 80 minutes. We showed what we are capable of when we concentrate and play to our strengths, as we did in the first half against York.
“Martin and I will be looking for that kind of performance across the whole 80 minutes at Rochdale. Having set the standard they have to maintain that in the weeks ahead.
“If you show you’re capable of doing I once then I don’t see why you can’t do it all the time.”
