THE fracas that marred a superb Sky tv clash between Hunslet and Workington last week could have repercussions for the rest of the season.
Three players will appear before the RFL Disciplinary Committee on Tuesday charged with fighting and dangerous contact in the match at the South Leeds Stadium which the Hawks won 24-14.
Hunslet hooker Richard Chapman and Workington Town’s Jarred Stack have been charged with Grade A offences of fighting in the 71st minute.
In addition Charlie Wabo of Hunslet has been charged with a Grade B offence for making dangerous contact in the 39th minute of the same match.
Hunslet centre Tom Haughey and Workington player Paddy Coupar received cautions for fighting in the 71st minute whilst Hunslet scrum-half Paul March was cautioned for behaviour contrary to the true spirit of the game in the 39th minute.
The charges and cautions were issued following a meeting of the RFL’s Match Review Panel.
If Town were to lose Stack through suspension it would be a major blow to their play-off hopes as he has been their stand-out player this season.
He will be fine for Sunday’s final regulation home game against Swinton Lions but will be sweating on his availability for Doncaster, the final Championship One game the week after, and subsequent play-off games.
Ahead of the game with Swinton on Sunday (3pm), joint coach Gary Charlton issued an appeal to the fans to get back down to support Town as they made the final charge for the play-offs.
Victory over Swinton Lions would ensure their place in the end-of-season showdown while two wins against Swinton and Doncaster could see Town finish as high as fourth and earning a home tie.
“I’ve heard so many people enjoyed the game on Sky, and not necessarily people who come to watch our home matches. WSe need them voting with their feet and getting back down to Derwent Park to show they appreciate what’s happening at the club.
“We are starting to move forward again and from the chairman down everyone is working together, and working hard to put together a squad of players capable of taking us to the next level.
Town expect to have former skipper Andrew Beattie back in the line-up against the Lions but full=-back Brett Carr and returning centre Jason Mossop will miss out with injuries.
Charlton said: “It looks like Brett’s got a bit of a hamstring pull and he’ll probably be out for a couple of weeks. Jason has an ankle injury.
“All year we’ve been very competitive and we’ve been getting better as the games have gone on.
“We’ve got to try to get in the play-offs, but Swinton will be a hard team to play against. We’ve had two tough games against them this year.
“But, if we defend how we did against Hunslet and get our attack right, then I’d like to think that we’ll have a good chance.”
Swinton Lions will be without Carl Sneyd, who is set for an operation on a troublesome knee problem.
But Bruce Johnson made his return last week and is likely to feature again in the trip to Cumbria.
