sedgley_park.jpgWorkington Town will only have to travel once over Easter instead of the double trek they faced into Lancashire.

Scheduled to play at Swinton's Sedgley Park ground (pictured) on Good Friday and Oldham on Easter Monday it wasn’t the most attractive holiday programme ever handed-out.

But Swinton had asked Town if they would mind changing the Good Friday game to a date later in the summer, and that has now been confirmed by the Rugby League as Sunday, June 20.

Town chairman Dave Bowden said: “To be quite honest it wasn’t going to be very good having to travel on both Friday and Monday so when Swinton asked for a change I wasn’t going to argue.”

Good Friday, April 2 will now be a free day for the Town in what would have been their fifth Championship One fixture.

Bowden is now looking forward to the start of the Championship One season at Neath on Sunday when Town play a historic game against the South Wales Scorpions.

“We are leaving early on Saturday morning but we will be stopping off at the Leigh Sports Village to do some training on the way down to our base in Swansea where we are staying overnight.

“That’s only about seven or eight miles to travel to Neath on Sunday, although we do have an early kick-off at 1pm,” said the chairman.

Former Neath RFC utility back Matt Hutchings will return to The Gnoll this Sunday after signing for the Scorpions. matt_hutchings_south_wales_scorpions.jpg

He is in contention to make his debut in their first ever game, a Co-operative Championship 1 clash against the Town.

Hutchings (pictured), who arrives at the club from Welsh Premiership rugby union side Pontypridd RFC, has also been playing rugby league for Bridgend Blue Bulls for the past four seasons, guiding them to two Welsh Championships.

Starting out at Treorchy RFC, the Rhondda-born player signed for Neath initially at under 21 level. He went on to play for Treherbert and then Bridgend Ravens from 2005-07, which is when he started playing rugby league for the successful Blue Bulls side.

His rugby league prowess came to fruition last year when he made his Wales A debut against England, scoring two tries as Wales won 42-4 on their way to their seventh Home Nations Championship in the last eight years.

The 29-year old, who can turn out at full-back, centre, wing or stand-off in rugby league, is also a proven goal-kicker.

Blue Bulls' chairman Simon Green said: "Matt is an excellent player. I'm very pleased for him. He is very versatile and can play in any position in the backs. He was outstanding in guiding us to three Grand Finals but didn't get a chance to play in those games due to rugby union club commitments. Hopefully now with the Scorpions, he'll get more chances to shine on the big stage."
