Return: Brett Smith going over for a try against Swinton.Workington Town lost their reserve grade match with Batley Bulldogs 30-18 at Derwent Park this afternoon.

Most of the scoring was done in the first-half when Batley established a 28-12 lead, and their extra pace was used to good effect.

It was a lot closer in the second period when the visitors were restricted to a penalty by Mark Barlow.

The visitors were quicker out of the traps and went 16-0 clear with tries from centre Stephen Brooke (2) and second-row forward Saquib Murtaz, with Barlow landing two goals.

Winger Robert Scott finally got Town moving with a try, converted by Scott Burgess.

But stand-off Barlow responded by going over for another Batley try which he converted.

Burgess scored Town’s second try and this time Brendan Riley added the conversion but before the break substitute Glenn Read went in for another Batley try which Barlow converted.

Barlow’s penalty put them 30-12 clear but Tyrone Dalton went in for a Town try which Burgess converted.

Brett Smith(pictured), back in Town colours at loose-forward, had an excellent game for the Cumbrians while Burgess was lively and Australian Chris Young had a solid game at prop.

The Town team was: Brendan Riley, Robert Scott, Scott Gorman, Tyrone Dalton, James Cartmel, Patrick Cooper, Scott Burgess, Peter Dobson, Giles Lomax, Chris Young, James Robinson, David Lynn, Brett Smith. Subs – Danny Jones, Jamie Sharp, Ben Rogerson, Nicky Burgess.
