WORKINGTON Town are to sign the experienced half-back Darren Holt for the remainder of the season.
The deal hasn't been completed, and Holt would be unable to play this week-end at London Skolars, but he is keen to join the west Cumbrian club.
Holt, 33, will be completing a full set of Cumbrian rugby league clubs, having started his carer in 1995 with the Carlisle Border Raiders.
He moved to Barrow in 1998 and although briefly appearing for Whitehaven in 2003, moved back to Craven Park in 2004.
His availability follows a winter season coaching and playing for Furness in the rugby union’s North Lancs Cumbria League following their promotion the previous year. He had also played union for Ayr and Wigton.
Holt is the all-time club points scorer and goal-kicker for Barrow and holds club records for goals in a season, drop goals in a season (held jointly with Steve Tickle) and drop goals in a career.
He is the only player in 133 years to play and score in every match in a season while winning numerous individual awards both for Barrow and nationally. He has represented both Cumbria and the Northern Ford Premiership select sides.
With injuries to both Jack Pedley and Darren King, Town are short of options in the play-maker role and Holt is seen as a ready-made, experienced operator in a key position.
As Town have also recently taken forward Ryan McDonald on board they have lost the services of Barrow forwards Ruairi McGoff and Jamie Butler who have returned to Craven Park to play in the reserve grade there.
However, Town are hoping that their return may only be a temporary one and the duo could be soon on their way back to west Cumbria.
Town lost 30-16 at home to Hunslet yesterday but have an opportunity to build momentum over the next few weeks as they have successive games against London Skolars, Gateshead Thunder and Swinton Lions who are all in the bottom five along with the west Cumbrians.
