The Women’s Rugby World Cup takes place in England this year and in Cumbria there will be special emphasis on promoting women’s rugby during the tournament.
England play Ireland on the opening day, August 20 and four days later they will play Kazakhstan while the remaining pool game is against U.S.A. on August 28.
All the pool matches take place at the Surrey Sports Centre, and the semi-finals, on 1st September and the final on September 5th are going to be played at the home of the Harlequins Rugby Club.
Rosie Williams, Managing Director of the RFUW, said: “I am very pleased with the facilities at the Sports Centre, and the whole tournament is being centred there, and we hope this will allow us to have a real party atmosphere around the event.”
Cumbria Rugby Football Union is actively planning to support women’s rugby on the back of the World Cup. With all England’s pool matches kicking off at 6.30pm in the evening it gives us plenty of opportunities to promote their activities.
On Saturday, August 28th, the ladies from the Carlisle Club have arranged a trip to watch the matches, in addition to playing against a side in London. For the actual Cup final it is hoped to organise a social event at the Carlisle Club while arranging some rugby and promotional activities.
Katie Wilson, who is the Regional Coordinator for Women and Girls Rugby, is very active in doing all she can to promote the women’s game in general and the women’s Rugby World Cup in particular.
“We are planning to apply to the RFUW for support through their World Club party pack resource, and would like to invite people from all over Cumbria to the Carlisle Club to watch the first game on television and take part in a mixed adult fancy dress touch rugby festival.
“We would also like to have a barbecue and disco. We are thinking of having Tag Rugby Competition for primary school girls during the World Cup as well,” she says.
Confirmation of the events will be announced later in the summer..
Katie added: “At the start of the season, we are forming a ladies senior county squad, and have arranged two training days in September at the Penrith club for all senior players in the county, and two county matches in October and November are being arranged. This will enable players to progress from their club sides along the player pathway towards representing England”
She continued “We are also going to form two development squads at Under 15 and Under 18 level, and we are thinking of having training sessions in both the north and the south of the county.
“Cumbria certainly has a talented pool of female rugby players and is looking to support them in their various stages of development.”
