CUMBRIAN star Steven Hanley (left) is working on his testimonial after being granted a benefit by the Sale club.
A dreadful catalogue of injuries have stacked-up against him and cost him England caps and even more tries for his club Sale. With 75 in Sharks’ colours he is the leading scorer in Premiership rugby.
Both shoulders have been plated; he has suffered a broken leg and a dislocated knee. When he made his England debut against Wales in 1999, winning his only cap, he suffered a broken wrist.
He toured Australia with England and was all set to play in the Millennium Test when he dislocated his should in the earlier tour game.
Dogged by injuries, Hanley’s season finished early this time because of a serious disc problem. He has had an operation and is just xoming to thje end of ten weeks of rehab.
Aspatria-born Hanley plied his trade with his home-town club and Cumbria before embarking on a ten year career with the Sharks.
The testimonial at Sale will include a couple of events in his native Cumbria. A dinner is being planned for Cumbria while a Sale XV will be asked to provide the opposition at Bower Park against the Aspatria President’s XV.
Sale team-mate Jason Robinson is coming to the end of a very successful testimonial and although Hanley won’t reach those dizzy heights, his commitment, dedication and prowess midst all the heart-breaking set-backs should ensure he is well rewarded.
