Division One basement player Dave Chapman (pictured) of Workington pulled off his first league win of the season against premiership player Mark Tunstall, also of Workington.

In a tight match throughout it was Tunstall who worked himself into a 2-0 lead. But another spirited fight back transpired going one better than the previous week for Chapman as he took the remaining three frames to record a valuable 3-2 victory.

That win lifted Chapman off the foot of the First Division table while Tunstall remains second bottom of the premiership.

In Division One saw the leader-board change hands yet again. Clifton’s Richard Nelson earned himself a convincing 5-0 victory over the previous leader Ryan Henry of Whitehaven. The only tight frame was the final one of the evening.

That result allowed Nelson to leapfrog Henry to take a two point lead at the top.

Keswick’s Chris D’Leny consolidated his position in third with a spirited battle with premiership second placed Peter O’Hagan of Workington.

D’Leny got off to a solid start to take the opening frame, however with breaks of 35 and 32 O’Hagan fought back to take two comfortable frames for a 2-1 lead.

The Keswick player was not about to concede defeat though, as with the aid of a 32 break the Derwent Club cueist pulled the match back to 2-2.

O’Hagan’s class showed through in the decisive frame of the night when he compiled a frame and match winning 77 break without reply to take the spoils.

D’Leny has three matches in hand of Henry in second as it appears to be developing into a two-horse race with Nelson.

Premiership leader Robert Sim of Whitehaven received an early shock as he dealt with the challenge of Clifton’s young cueist Gary Mattinson.

It began in the guise of a ‘David v Goliath’ encounter as Mattinson took the opening frame but that was where the potential shock of the season ended. Sim rattled in breaks of 82, 52, 45, 45, 40, 38 and 32 to wrap-up the match 4-1 and keep his nearest rival Peter O’Hagan at arms length.

Sim is ten points clear of O’Hagan having played one match more. O’Hagan had a 5-0 win over Henry with the help of 56 and 30 breaks to maintain second spot.

Workington’s Alan Stephenson pushed himself into the mid-table places and distanced himself from the lower reaches of the premiership with solid victories over Mattinson by 4-1 (only losing the last frame) and 5-0 over Whitehaven’s Dave Atkinson in a tighter than the score-line suggests encounter.

The best frame of the match came in the opening one where, despite Atkinson making a 34 break, Stephenson replied with a 30 break to take the first of his five frames.

The final match of the week saw the premiership clash of third placed Steven O’Hagan of Workington maintaining his good form when challenged by Maryport’s Mike Park.

With tight first and third frames O’Hagan earned himself an unassailable 3-0 lead before Park fought back to a more respectable 3-2 defeat with a break of 30 in the final frame. Park slips back into bottom place albeit with matches in hand.
