This Saturday sees the West Cumbria Snooker League continue to provide it’s playing members with free coaching by Scotland’s qualified coach Paul Jameson. The latest session commences at 3.30 pm in the Workington Conservative Club with anyone welcome to attend on an observation basis.
In the D. Moffitt Roofing and Building summer league, reigning champion Robert Sim jumped to the top of the pile with his latest comfortable win over Maryport’s Mike Park.
Sim compiled breaks of 49, 44, 43, 37 and 31 on his way to a 4-0 victory to go joint top on eight league points with last week’s early pace-setter Clive Lister of Workington. Sim is top by virtue of winning more matches. Park now lies bottom.
Last season’s promoted Stuart Ryan (pictured) of Workington showed signs of settling down against higher level opposition this season when facing the challenge of top flight regular Steven O'Hagan.
O'Hagan took a tight opening frame and had compiled a break of 33 in the second to look well on his way to a positive result. Ryan, however, had other plans and took the frame by a narrow margin.
This seemed to give Ryan confidence as he took the lead taking the third frame comfortably. O'Hagan's experience allowed him to claw back the final frame on the black for his second 2-2 draw of the season. O'Hagan lies in fourth while Ryan moves off the foot of the table.
The remaining activity took place in the second division as Maryport Social’s league newcomer Andrew Henderson continued to set the pace despite a 3-1 defeat to Keswick’s Chris D’Leny.
D’Leny took two tight opening frames before settling into the match to win a comfortable third.
However Henderson battled back to claim a comfortable final frame to remain top by a single league point. D’Leny lies in third place with a match in hand of the leader.
Clifton’s Gary Mattinson had a busier schedule this last week as he completed two fixtures. Mattinson had mixed fortunes as he firstly suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of league newcomer Mike Walker from Cleator Moor.
Walker took a 2-0 lead before Mattinson replied by taking the third frame for 2-1 but could not maintain the momentum as Walker closed the match out with the final frame and lies just a single point behind front-runner Henderson.
Mattinson made amends though as he took on another league newcomer in Workington’s Leigh Musgrave. Mattinson took a comfortable opening frame but Musgrave hit back with an equally convincing second to tie the match.
Mattinson pushed on by taking the next and completed the 3-1 win with narrow win on the black in the final frame of the evening. Mattinson is mid-table with Musgrave second bottom.
The final fixture of the week saw newcomer Sal Cakmak of Maryport earn his first win of the season over Whitehaven's Ryan Henry. Cakmak claimed a comfortable first frame but Henry replied with a solid second for 1-1.
Cakmak was able to settle the better taking the remaining frames comfortably to win 3-1. Cakmak now joins Henry on three points just below half-way in the second division.
