In the D.Moffitt Roofing and Building summer league Workington’s Clive Lister (pictured) leads the pack in the top division after the second week of the season, writes GREEN BAIZE.
The Workington Cons Club player picked-up a draw against Mark Tunstall and then beat Mike Park 4-0.
Against Tunstall Lister made a 33 break in the first frame but could not prevent his opponent from claiming the opener.
Lister reversed the scores to tie the match before Tunstall regained the lead with the help of a 30 break. However Lister was not done as he took the final frame for a 2-2 draw.
Lister fared better when challenged by club colleague Mike Park of Maryport. Despite Park compiling a 33 break in the opening frame it was Lister who took it on the black. Lister then won the second on the black followed by the remaining two very tight frames to record a useful 4-0 victory and a single point lead at the top of the division. Park is second bottom.
Tunstall continued his tough start to the season with a 4-0 defeat at the hands of last season’s summer league champion Robert Sim from Whitehaven.
Sim made breaks of 35 and 31 in the first two frames but Tunstall almost clinched the third losing out on the black. H then completed the win with a frame-winning break of 63.
Tunstall found himself up against John Street club colleague Steven O’Hagan in his third match in two weeks and found himself quickly 2-0 down as O’Hagan took the first two frames comfortably.
O’Hagan won the third with the aid of a 34 break but Tunstall ending the match on a positive note making a break of 30 on his way to a comfortable final frame for a 3-1 reversal. Tunstall is third bottom with O’Hagan in fourth.
New summer league entrant brother Peter O’Hagan also got off to winning ways this week as he firstly saw off the challenge of newly promoted Stuart Ryan of Workington 4-0 compiling breaks of 58, 47, 47, 35 and 34.
This was followed up with a useful victory over Maryport’s Ryan Ismay after losing the opening frame but it was then one-way traffic as the former county runner-up took the remaining frames comfortably including a 49 break in the last. Peter O’Hagan lies in second place.
Ismay continued to make it a tough start for Ryan and despite the Workington player taking a comfortable opening frame the Maryport Social player won the three remainder for a 3-1 win and sits in third one further point behind. Ryan occupies the one relegation place.
In the second division first-time entrant Andrew Henderson claimed an early lead by three points as he recorded his first league win when taking on Maryport Social club colleague Sal Cakmak.
Despite a tight first frame and a 30 break from Cakmak in the final frame Henderson pulled off a useful 4-0 victory. Cakmak lies mid-table.
Whitehaven’s Ryan Henry looks set to be amongst the front-runners as he took on another expected front-runner in Keswick’s Chris D’Leny. The result did nothing to separate the two either as Henry claimed a tight opening frame which D’Leny replied to with a comfortable second for 1-1.
D’Leny then took the lead before Henry clawed back a black-ball fourth for 2-2. D’Leny lies in fourth place.
Henry fared a little better when challenging newcomer Mike Walker of Cleator Moor. With both players competing from Marchon the first two frames were shared with comfortable wins for both players.
However it was Henry who came through in the end to take a 3-1 win. Henry lies in third with Walker in second. Newcomer Workington’s Leigh Musgrave and Clifton’s young cueist Gary Mattinson have yet to open their accounts.
The draw for the MT Cleaning services trophy first round will take place this week with next week being set aside in the fixtures calendar for completion of the ties which are best of three frames.
