After last weeks MT Cleaning Services singles knockout ties were completed it was back to the summer individual league campaign this week, writes GREEN BAIZE.
In the top flight Workington's Steven O'Hagan secured a much needed boost to his flagging start to the summer season with a very useful 4-0 away victory over Maryport's Ryan Ismay and a 3-1 win over Workington's Dave Chapman.
The results promote O'Hagan to second place but still nineteen points off the pace set by Copeland's Robert Sim who has played three games more than most of his opponents.
Front runner and defending champion Sim squeezed in three fixtures last week taking all four frames from Maryport's Mike Park assisted by breaks of 64, 59, 51 and 45.
But he could only manage 2-2 draws against the Workington pair of Clive Lister and Mark Tunstall.
Lister made a 32 break whilst Sim compiled a 33 and a 31 while against Tunstall he added breaks of 40, 34 and a new season and record Summer league high break to date of 108.
In addition Tunstall went down by 3-1 to Park, who had taken the first two frames.
Tunstall claimed the third only for the Maryport player to take the final frame for the win. As a result Tunstall drops two places to fourth.
Park also saw off the challenge of Ismay with a 3-1 victory despite a 41 break from the youngster. Park moves up two places to third whilst Ismay now props up the top flight.
Chapman came out the better against Lister with a 3-1 win to move himself out of the relegation zone.
Lister drew 2-2 with Clifton's Richard Nelson after taking a comfortable opening frame with the help of a 35 break.
Nelson replied with a black-ball win in the second to level-up and he took the lead with a comfortable third before Lister replied with an equally convincing final frame to share the spoils.
In the second division Whitehaven's Ryan Henry had a useful 4-0 victory over Clifton's young cueist Gary Mattinson. That put Henry into the front-runner position in the second tier. Workington's Stuart Ryan boosted his placing with a hard fought 4-0 win over Maryport's Craig Denwood and repeated that result in the reverse fixture to take maximum points from his opponent to put himself into third place with Denwood just inside the bottom half of the table.
Mattinson also went down 3-1 to Keswick's Chris D'Leny who now lies in second place two points adrift of Henry with a game in hand.
The MT Cleaning Services Trophy was drawn last week by Ryan Ismay and Mike Park at the Workington Conservative Club with the following quarter-final ties - Craig Denwood (Glasson) v Dave Chapman (Glasson); Ryan Ismay (Maryport Soc.) v Richard Nelson (Clifton Lions); Chris D'Leny (Derwent) v Mark Tunstall (John St); Robert Sim (Marchon) v Clive Lister (Station Rd).
Ties are best of three frames with the week commencing Monday 24th August set aside for the round. Completion date is Sunday 30th August.
