clifton1.jpgClifton reversed their earlier season defeat at the hands of Workington Legion with an excellent 4-2 home win.

That lifted them off the bottom of the Division Two table in the newly sponsored The Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League.

The family run Workington business will be sponsoring the league for the remainder of the season and the association is only too glad to be linked with such a reputable local company.

Back to the snooker, in the first frame Clifton’s most successful player over the last couple of seasons, Richard Nelson, was to take the table and not being one to disappoint he quickly established a 33 point lead.

This being backed up with some with some superb safety play was only going to take the frame in one direction and as Workington Legion’s Paul McWalters could find no answers Nelson eventually crossed the first with a 60-23 win.

The next frame of the evening saw another solid Clifton performer, Mike Middlehurst, emulate his teammates first frame start as with some fine play of his own he established a 20 point lead.

Even though the similarities ended there with a 17 break from Workington opponent Lee McTiffin, the Clifton cueist quickly quelled any Legion hopes with two smaller contributions. This left McTffin requiring snookers and with a hand shake soon to follow Middlehurst recorded a 59-26 victory.

Up next and with his side leading 2-0 Clifton’s Luke Naylor was quick to follow in his teammates footsteps with a lead of 25 points.

On the other hand as just 18 points remained Legion’s Ian Torley faced a potential frame winning situation. As the blue was dispatched Torley looked for all intentions and purposes as being the winner, conversely as the white disappeared the game was still in the balance.

Something had to give and as Naylor cruelly fluked the blue the fate of the Workington cueist was eventually decided, 57-37.

In frame four it was obvious to see that someone needed to stop the rot and as Workington Legion’s Sandy Smith took the table Clifton momentum was almost immediately curtailed. As hard as Clifton’s Barry Graham tried the frame seemed to be going only one way and with Smith finally finishing out on top 39-29 the first Legion point was on the board.

The penultimate frame was to produce the most comprehensive victory of the night as Clifton captain Graham Renney took on Legion’s Mark Lavin.

Capable of beating anyone from either division on his day, Lavin potted the balls off the proverbial lampshades to lead by 50 points. Renney stuck to the task but could do nothing to delay the inevitable as Lavin bullied his way to a 64-19 win.

With Workington Legion having clawed back to 3-2 from 3-0 down all the final frame pressure was now on Clifton youngster Gary Mattinson and in experienced Legion opponent Maurice Wigham he was really up against it.

Mattinson gained the early advantage but with a rapid reply from Wigham the game remained tight.

This theme continued and with just the colours remaining the Clifton teenager had a small lead. As in frame three lady luck was to play yet another vital role and again it fell in favour of the Clifton outfit.

This time a fortunately disposed brown gave Mattinson the necessary impetus and he eventually cleared the balls he required for a 58-38 frame and match win.

Also in Division Two league leaders Senhouse A continued their title onslaught with a 5-1 home win over second placed Station Rd.

Derwent B’s Joe Bell defeated Glasson’s Shaun Moore in the last frame of the evening to pull off an all important away 3-3 draw. However the night was highlighted with a 32 break from Glasson’s Andrew Mitchelhill in his victory over Derwent B Captain Wally Good.

In division 1 the Railway club produced their best performance of the season so far with a tremendous 5-1 home win over last week’s league leaders Maryport Social A.

With the Maryport Social A result unknown to them a 5-1 away win for John Street against counterparts Social B, that incidentally included John Street breaks of 31 from Simon Frazer and 33 from Peter O’Hagan, moved them to sole divisional leaders.

In the final two fixtures of the week Derwent A cemented their top 4 hopes with a 6-0 home win versus Seaton Legion and with a hard fought 3-3 draw between home side Ellenborough and Senhouse B both teams focus remains very much on avoiding relegation.
