In the latest round of D. Moffitt Roofing and Building fixtures Copeland's Robert Sim is still the only West Cumbria Snooker League player with a 100% record, writes GREEN BAIZE.
The Marchon player did not have everything quite his own way, however, and almost suffered an upset result of sorts when challenged by his opposite end of the table competitor Stuart Ryan of Workington.
Sim claimed the two opening frames including a high scoring second from both players. Ryan took a comfortable third frame to give him a chance of pulling off an upset and he almost did as county champion Sim managed to claim victory with a tight and low scoring final frame for 3-1.
In Sim's second fixture within a week Maryport's Ryan Ismay was the host. Sim convincingly took the first two frames including breaks of 41, 33 and 32. Ismay responded with a comfortable third frame win to leave Sim needing the final frame for victory.
Ismay constructed a 30 break but could not prevent Sim closing the match out 3-1 with a 44 break for his seventeenth 30+ break of the season. Sim lies six points clear at the top of division one while Ismay is joint second bottom, four points clear of Ryan.
Second-placed Peter O'Hagan of Workington briefly gained ground on Sim as he took on brother Steven. Including a break of 32 in the opening frame Peter took the two opening frames going on to take a tight third and black-ball final frame for 4-0.
The former county finalist was then on the end of an upset result when challenging Mike Park of Maryport. Park claimed a comfortable opening frame with the help of a 32 break. Then despite a break of 35 from O'Hagan he could not prevent himself going 2-0 down.
Park then took a black-ball third frame to give the former county semi-finalist a 3-0 lead before O'Hagan compiled a 51 break in the final frame for a 3-1 reversal. Park remains third, two points behind O'Hagan.
Steven O'Hagan's second fixture of the week found him up against fellow mid-table competitor Workington's Clive Lister who took the tight opening frame.
O'Hagan replied with the second and third frames before Lister drew the match with a comfortable last frame for 2-2. Lister is in fourth place with Steven O’Hagan tied with Ismay on joint second bottom.
The Second Division is absolutely wide open with any player in the competition still having a good chance to win the title and gain promotion.
Keswick's Chris D'Leny kept himself a single point in front of the chasing pack as he earned a very useful victory over Maryport's Sal Cakmak.
D'Leny compiled a 33 break in the opening frame to take a comfortable 1-0 lead and followed his good start up with a convincing second and comfortable third and fourth frames for a 4-0 win.
Cakmak fared better in his second match of the week against Cleator Moor's Mike Walker.
HeCakmak took a comfortable opening frame before Walker replied in similar fashion to tie the match at 1-1. Cakmak then claimed a convincing third going on to take a black-ball final frame with a clearance on the colours for 3-1. Walker is second while Cakmak lies just two points behind him.
The remaining fixture saw Whitehaven's Ryan Henry continue to make gradual progress up the table as he was challenged by former county pool champion Garry Southern of Maryport. It was Southern who got off to the better start claiming the first very low scoring frame.
Henry tied the match with a low-scoring second before pushing on to win two tight final frames for a useful 3-1 victory. Henry lies in fourth just two league points behind the leader while Southern is a single point further back with a match in hand.
The next round of the MT Cleaning Services Trophy will be drawn shortly with the week commencing Monday 16th August set aside for the ties.
