The MT Cleaning Services Trophy took centre stage recently with a blank Summer League fixture week being set aside for the first round ties, writes GREEN BAIZE.
Whitehaven’s Robert Sim (pictured) who currently leads the way in Division One coasted through to the quarter-finals with a 2-0 win over Clifton youngster Gary Mattinson of the Second Division. Sim compiled breaks of 44 and 30 as he went through 86-30, 84-4.
There was a double upset as Maryport Social cueists Andrew Henderson and Sal Cakmak, both of Division Two, overcame the Division One pair of Clive Lister and Mike Park respectively.
Henderson continued his impressive start in the West Cumbria Snooker League and had to battle back from 1-0 down as Lister started confidently to take the opening frame 57-34.
Henderson then clinched a black-ball second 47-46 to leave the tie hinged on the final frame. The Lamplugh-based player came through a tight decider by 55-44 to book his place in the next round.
Cakmak, from Maryport, got off to the best possible start in his tie against Maryport’s Park as a break of 30 made all the difference on his way to a 60-50 victory in the first frame.
.Park then rallied and made a break of 32 to try and claw his way back into the match but Cakmak continued with some solid potting to take the frame 81-53 and earn a 2-0 victory.
Workington’s Peter O’Hagan eased through to the next round with a 2-0 win over club colleague Stuart Ryan, but no other details are to hand. Cleator Moor’s Mike Walker received a bye.
There were three remaining ties to be concluded at the time of writing.
Despite the knockout first round taking place there were a couple of league fixtures completed which saw Sim cement his position at the top with a 4-0 win over most likely challenger O’Hagan.
After a clear opening frame win for Sim the second was closer but still went Sim’s way for 2-0. Then breaks of 53 and 51 in the third secured the win with a tight final frame also going the Marchon players way. Sim is four points clear in the top tier with O’Hagan five points behind in third.
The only other fixture promoted league newcomer Walker to the top of division two by a single league point as he earned a very useful victory over Keswick’s Chris D’Leny.
It was D’Leny who started the match in solid fashion, making a break of 31 to win a comfortable first frame. But undeterred Walker grew stronger in each subsequent frame to finish the match the 3-1 winner. D’Leny is third, three points behind Walker with a game in hand.
Maryport's Garry Southern is the latest newcomer to the D.Moffitt Roofing & Building Summer League. The former county eight-ball pool champion replaces Leigh Musgrave who unfortunately had to withdraw last week.
Last Saturday Workington Conservative Club hosted a further coaching session for league members with qualified coach Paul Jameson (pictured) of Dumfries as part of an ongoing effort to help improve the general standard of play in the league and area as a whole. The WCSL appreciates the support given by the club.
