A Station Road side that consisted of Mike Walker, Karl Newton and Grant Porter powered their way to victory in the Cockermouth and District Snooker League Trebles H’cap final this week.
They defeated a Seaton Legion trio of Scott Messenger, Mark Tatton and Paul Mostyn in the final.
In the six reds/three frame aggregate format, Station Road’s Mike Walker nicked the first frame against Seaton’s Scott Messenger on the last ball.
As Walker’s team mate Grant Porter won by 30 points over Legion’s Mark Tatton a Station Road 40 point lead was taken into the last frame.
With only a possible 75 points on the table in this shortened format Seaton’s Paul Mostyn was always up against it.
Station Road’s Karl Newton was left with the responsibility of converting this substantial advantage into a win, but the pressure of expectation produced a few nervy shots.
Nevertheless as Mostyn failed to convert a good chance in amongst the balls this seemed to spur the Station Road cueist on and with a number of fine pots the Trebles title was soon in the hands of Newton and his Station Road teammates.
In the first Semi Final Seaton Legion secured their final place with a convincing victory over Glasson competitors, Andrew Mitchelhill, Ben Williams and Shaun Moore.
The second Semi proved to be a closer affair as Station Road’s Porter had to battle hard to edge Maryport Social B’s Paul Lister in the final frame to put an end to his and team mate’s Colin Sealby and Ryan Ismay’s title hopes.
Defending Champions Clifton crashed out in the pre semi final group stages, as a draw that placed them with what ended up being the two finalists proved to be a bridge too far.
The other qualifying group that included two Glasson teams and Maryport Social B went down to the very final frame to decide the last two semi final places. With Social B’s Paul Lister defeating Glasson A’s Dave Chapman in a nail biting climax the fate of the Glasson A side was decided.
Thanks to Workington Legion and to Pat for providing an excellent venue/buffet.
The Individual H’cap quarter finals were also completed this week.
In the first clash, Seaton Legion’s Paul Mostyn fought hard to record a 3-2 victory over Clifton’s Mike Dawson.
With the Clifton cueist giving away 15 start a quick 38 break in the first ended up being enough to decide it, however with a relief inducing black ball win in the second Mostyn levelled the match score.
The third frame saw Dawson back in amongst balls and with a break of 41 he was quickly 2-1 up. At the point at which the game looked to be slipping away from the Legionnaire he astonishingly found another gear, as with a battling fourth frame win followed by two 28 breaks in the last, his semi final place was guaranteed.
The second last eight tie produced a high quality encounter as John Street’s Peter O’Hagan presided 3-1 over teammate Simon Frazer.
O’Hagan started the match in superb fashion as 79 clearance in the first added to 38 and 40 breaks in the second quickly put him 2-0 up. Frazer made his 15 start count in the next to take the score to 2-1, nonetheless as O’Hagan regrouped with a win on the blue in the next his title hopes now remain very much alive.
In another clash between players from the same team Derwent A’s Chris D’Leny, receiving 7 start, defeated his team captain John Thwaites 3-0 in a one sided encounter.
As the remaining tie resulted in a walkover for Station Road’s Mike Walker over Maryport Social A’s Alan Moore the last semi final place was filled.
In the 7 a side handicap KO semi’s the Railway club produced a terrific comeback from 3-2 down to defeat Division One league leaders Maryport Social A 4-3 and now join Derwent A in the final to be played at Clifton on Wednesday, February 17th.
A finely balanced tie swung in favour of the Maryport side as in frame five Social A’s Julian Plaza produced an excellent 55 break to defeat Railway’s Ryan Adams and give his team the momentum.
In spite of this a tough contest was eventually won over under extreme pressure with two great performances from Railwaymen Barry Collins and Steve Garroway.
Collins’ tactical execution belied his age as he out-foxed Maryport’s extremely experienced John Fleming and Steve Garroway potted the last four balls as his life depended on it to preside over equally knowledgeable Social cueist Alan Moore.
Substantial scalps claimed on both counts by the Railway teammates as the Maryport pair currently occupy places two and one respectively in the league leading player averages.
