Ian Thomas has had to postpone his planned trip to Derwent Park tomorrow night.
The 67-year-old Comets team manager is now unwinding at home after a fortnight in hospital, half of it in intensive care.
In an exclusive interview with getnoticedonline.co.uk, Thomas re-lived the nightmare illness which had given him a ‘close call’ following a routine operation.
“I don’t want to be as close again. I was out of it for a good week because of the stuff they were putting into me and most of it is a blur.
“The one thing I will say is the care and attention I received was simply first class. I had two nurses looking after me all the time in intensive care.
“Since the first operation I have had two more and I know that I will need another one. I go to see the consultant on Tuesday and I will have a better idea then of what’s going to happen.”
Thomas had developed a serious infection after a routine, minor operation to remove a kidney stone.
“I was out for a breath of fresh air on Thursday with Dot but I was very tired when I got back.
“I had planned to go to Scunthorpe tonight and then travel up to Workington for Saturday’s match with Glasgow but I have been advised just to take it easy.
“So as things stand now I am looking to get to Redcar next Thursday and then to Workington for the Saturday meeting with King’s Lynn,” he said.
Thomas, who launched speedway at Workington in 1970 and then came back when Tony Mole re-launched in 1999, is now in his third stint with the club.
“I would just like to say a big thank you to all the people who sent messages of support while I was in hospital, either by card or over the phone to Dot. It was very much appreciated,” he said.
