AFTER being in touch throughout the meeting, Workington Comets missed out on a valuable bonus point against the Scorpions.

They went into the last heat of the night needing a 4-2 to move within six points and grab the important point.

But the home pair of guest Ben Wilson and David Howe broke best of all and Adrian Rymel couldn’t get into serious contention, with skipper Kevin Doolan at the back.

The heat maximum to end the night lifted Scunthorpe 12 points clear and also hoisted them up the table into a mid-table berth – although they have ridden many more matches than all their rivals.

Without a point to show for their efforts, the Comets still lead the way in the Premier League but only have a two point advantage at the top.

It means they must take maximum points from tonight’s clash with Glasgow Tigers to impose themselves again on the chasing pack.

The Comets actually led 10-8 after three heats and after seven heats were all square at 21-21.

Although they conceded the lead the Comets were still well in with a chance of taking the bonus, even as late as heat 13 when they trailed by only four points.

But the last two races sank Workington’s hopes. Richard Lawson and Craig Cook were left behind by Jerran Hart and Simon Lambert, before the final heat went the same way as the Scorpions gated quickly to gain maximum advantage.

Workington won just five of the 15 races – three of them by skipper Doolan, in good heart after his triumph in the Welsh Open.
Fellow heat leaders Rymel and Andre Compton picked up the other race wins.

The Comets used rider replacement for injured number two Charles Wright and that only earned them three third places from the four races on the programme.

At reserve the Scorpions out-scored the Workington duo with John Branney (2), feeling his way back, and Craig Cook (6) just making half the points acquired by Lambert (13) and Hart (4).

Owner Keith Denham said: “Scunthorpe were the better team on the night and probably adapted to the over-watered track more than we did.

“”It was disappointing to lose out on a bonus point but I expect we will be making amends tomorrow night against the Tigers.

“They have two useful guests in Steve Johnston and Justin Sedgman, both from Somerset, but I think we should have too much for them.”

Glasgow are third bottom with just five points and lost 54-41 in a Premier Trophy clash at Derwent Park earlier in the season.

The Glasgow side, already devoid of Ross Brady and Josh Grajczonek will now also be missing talisman Shane Parker in a week-end which seems them take on League leaders Workington and League title favourites King’s Lynn on Sunday.

Parker was sidelined in an early crash in the Premier League Pairs last week and although he has no broken bones in his back, he is sitting out this weekend's clashes.

Johnston will guest for Parker, but in a slight change of tact, the Tigers will operate rider replacement for Grajczonek and bring in Justin Sedgmen, also of Somerset, to guest for Ross Brady. This will allow Rusty Harrison, a former Workington rider, an extra outing at his former track.

Grajczonek is still back home in Australia but has set himself a target of a fortnight on Sunday as a possible return to the team. He will miss out on the tour of Somerset and Stoke next weekend as well as the home fixture with Sheffield, but is determined to race against Somerset the following Sunday.
