Friday, 07 November 2008

Forget SW19 the tennis postcode you need to know is CA7.

That's Silloth's Solway Community Technology College where its tennis stars are chasing a national title.

After becoming County Champions, the Under 13 team qualified for the Lawn Tennis Association's National Tennis Tournament.

The Solway team, of pupils Ross Johnston, Oliver Neilly, Patrick Brough, Kieron Carr and Ross Jefferson, first saw off a strong team from the King Edward VII & The Queen Mary School in Lytham, Blackpool, winning four matches to two.

They then forced a three three draw against the St Josephs Sports College in Bolton.

That has earned the team a place in North West finals against Merchant Taylor School in Liverpool.

That match takes place on Monday. If successful they're through to the national finals.

Deputy Headteacher and Head of PE, Colin Campbell said :

"This is a fantastic achievement for a small West Cumbrian school of only 200 pupils who have been competing against tennis academies and private schools from across the region. It is a fantastic opportunity for the team to compete at this level and they are all excited about the final. The whole school wishes them the best of luck."
