Campbell's Bluebird crashes at Coniston water

This is the moment on January 4, 1967 when Donald Campbell failed in his attempt on the world waterspeed record but now moves are afoot to try and get the restored craft Bluebird to trial on Coniston again - although nowhere near the speeds she achieved over 40 years ago.

Members of the national park authority today agreed to ask for views on changing current regulations which could allow trials for the craft to exceed the existing 10 mph speed limit on the lake.

A report from Director of Park Services Bob Cartwright explained that the lake’s current byelaws do allow for speeds in excess of 10 mph but only where vessels are trying to mount a serious challenge on a genuine world speed record.

The rebuilt Bluebird – which was recovered from the lake in 2001 after Donald Campbell’s fatal speed attempt in 1967 – would be capable of speeds way above 10 mph.

But its restorers say it would no longer be capable of mounting a serious and legitimate challenge even to the craft’s own current British Outright water speed record of 276.3 mph.

The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby (1966)

As we've reported in our general news section Eleanor Rigby is very much in the headlines - and she could help a Cumbrian charity.

A pay slip for a certain Miss E Rigby is to be auctioned off at the end of the month in London and there are high hopes that it could make as much as £500,000 which will go to the very special Sunbeams Trust.

The song was primarily written by Paul McCartney, although in an interview conducted with Playboy magazine in 1980 shortly before he died, John Lennon claimed that, at McCartney's request, he completed the lyrics to the second and third verse.

Whatever, it was Sir Paul who sent the old document to Annie Mawson, founder of the Sunbeams Trust and which is being auctioned on November 27 along with other pop memorabilia.

You can catch up on the full story in our general news section.

WORKINGTON REDS - vintage footage - (part two)

Following on from the clip which covered Bill Shankly's visit to Workington for the naming of the bar in his honour this is a piece which was done leading up to the Reds final League game in 1977 against Newport.

It's been posted on YouTube by BULLFROGBUZZ and is really a gem as far as Workington fans are concerned. Not very happy times for the club but the clips certainly stirred a lot of memories.

BULLFROGBUZZ is certainly a name to look out for if he posts more stuff on YouTube, so keep a sharpe eye open.

WORKINGTON REDS - Billy Watson & Bill Shankly

I stumbled on this while looking on You Tube and realised it must have been shot when the great Liverpool manager was back at Borough Park for the naming of the Shankly Bar in his honour. Billy Watson and Shanks were great friends from the time they teamed-up at Borough Park as manager and groundsman.

It was no secret that Shanks would have liked Billy to follow him to Anfield as head groundsman, but he chose to stay in Workington and look after his mother.

Nice also on this clip to hear an old pal Eric Wallace, the late stalwart of Border Television who conducted the interviews. For a brief period Eric was pertsuaded to join the Workington board, too.

Marshall Scott Etc...'Going Where The Loving Is'

I've been looking for this for a while now and happened to bump into George Reid on Oxford Street over the week-end and he told me that it was now on You Tube.

It was recorded under E.M.I at Abbey Rd.Sudios Studio No.2 London in the mid sixties and was in the charts for a few weeks, suggesting that the Cumbrian group could make the break through - but unfortunately that never quite happened.

Great record at the time. I was sent a free copy to review for my column in the Evening Star - By Stylus - and obviously it was given a great write-up.

The band will be back in Britain in December and we're all keeping our fingers dcrossed the committee of Marypport Blues Festival will have been sufficiently impressed to get her booked-up for next year's extravaganza.

Mitchell Productions were in charge of the photo shoot - hope you enjoy Amy's music and her interview exlusively for getnoticedonline.co.uk
