Clip of the Day, July 17th, 2008 - Vic Dana - I Will

I've been looking for this record for a long time and good old Google supplies the answer via You Tube. You may remember Billy Fury recording the song, but this was the original and I don't think there's much doubt that the originals are nearly always the best. According to Wkipedia he now sells used cars in Paducah, Kentucky.

Clip of the Day, July 16th, 2008 - Neil Sedaka - Calendar Girl

Neil Sedaka made this in 1960 when he was just 21 and was among his host of hits in that period. He continued to flourish and made some even better records in the 70's and 80's. Terrific performer who is still doing the rounds and I note on his website he has dates as far ahead in the States as November 2009.

Clip of the Day, July 15th, 2008 - Rockin' Ronnie Riot and the Rebels - Soca Brazilia

If you haven't experienced a Rockin' Ronnie Riot and the Rebels performance it does come with a health warning. Described as wacky funsters who have been in and out of the music scene in west Cumbria since Workington Reds were a Football League side, they have achieved almost cult status. As they are Workington Reds fans, and have actually given permission for this track to be featured on Cumbria's fastest growing website, they have to be given top billing. Fasten your seat belts, reach for the oxygen mask and relax - this is different.

Clip of the Day, July 14th, 2008 - Ernie K Doe - Mother in law

Great thing this Wikipedia. I'd chosen this record for today and suddenly decided I wanted to know more about Ernie. Here's what I found.

Born Ernest Kador, Jr., in New Orleans, Louisiana, K-Doe is perhaps best known for his colourful personality and his 1961 hit song "Mother-In-Law," which went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. K-Doe predicted that the only currently familiar tunes which will still be known in 1,000 years are "The Star Spangled Banner" and his "Mother In Law". His next biggest hit was "A Certain Girl".

He actually died in 2001 aged 65 and at the time of his death was still very active on the rhythm and blues, as well as jazz scene.

Clip of the Day, July 13th, 2008 - Ricky Nelson - Teenage Idol
Congratulations to Ricky Nelson, first artist to have two recordings featured on Clip of the Day. He does what you call easy-listening pop and made a string of excellent records which will no doubt eventually feature here. This is Teenage Idol - it's not very long, just over two minutes but is a memorable little ditty which I hope you all enjoy.

Clip of the day, July 12th, 2008 - Lenny Welch - Since I fell for you

I think this is an absolute classic from 1963. I remember hearing it on Radio Luxemburg, ordering it next day at Mrs Kovary's next to the picture house (the Grand) in Cockermouth and having to wait three weeks before it came in. Wonderful memories - great song, superbly sung.

Clip of the Day, July 11th, 2008 - Ultrabeat and Darren Styles - Discolights

No, I haven't taken leave of my senses. I know this isn't my cup of tea but I gave a choice to my 15-year-old daughter for the day and this is what she came up with. I'm slowly trying to feed her the good stuff without much success at the moment, as you can see - and hear.

Clip of the day, July 10th, 2008 - Steve Harley/Cockney Rebel- Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)

I didn't realise until checking this video that it was as long ago as 1975 that Harley and Cockney Rebel brought-out this classic. I think his phraseology is brilliant, makes the record. Good stuff.
