Clip of the day, August 4th, 2008 - The Routers - Let's Go

With the football season almost upon us and the feelgood factor high at Workington after such a convincing win over 'the old enemy' it's appropriate to look at a tune which spawned a few terrace chants over the years. Probably not very good ones but this is where it all originated from in 1962.

I'm told that the group was made up of Californian session musicians who also got together once or twice as B Bumble and the Stingers.

Whatever - time to make-up your chant - Let's Go.

Clip of the Day, August 3rd, 2008 - Garnet Mimms and the Enchanters - Cry Baby

This was from my soul period - and I'm talking about the very best here in Garnet Mimms. This was soul as it used to be and should be - although my mates thought I just liked these guys cos they had weird names. I think this fellow has one of the best soul voices of them all. The song topped the R&B chart and went to number in the American pop chart in 1963 and paved the way for soul hits by Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding later in the decade.

Mimms went solo and performed another Berns and Ragovoy hit "Take Good Care Of You" in 1966. Mimms worked with Jimi Hendrix in England the following year. He did some recording on the MGM and Verve Records labels.

In the 1970s he released a few funk songs as Garnet Mimms and the Truckin' Company. Mimms was given a Pioneer Award in 1999 by the Rhythm and Blues Foundation.

In the 1980s, Garnet found his calling ministering to lost souls in prison, but in 2007 returned to recording and in 2008 released a new gospel album Is Anybody Out There? on the Evidence label, produced and (primarily) written by Jon Tiven. I'mgoing to have a fish around for a track or two from that to see how he's changed in the last forty years.

Clip of the day, August 2nd, 2008 - Status Quo - Rocking all over the world

When one of the world's musical survivors hit west Cumbria we have to pay tribute to their staying power. They are in Whitehaven tonight and will be in top form, I'm sure. I saw them about 20 years ago at the Sands Centre and I thought they were ok - 7 out of 10. Maybe I caiught them on an off night because I was looking for 9.

Clip of the Day, August 1st, 2008 Everly Brothers - Cathy's clown

We've featured them before and to be quite honest they could be included every week because they are a bit special. Fell out for years apparently but made-up for a reunion world tour (where have we heard that before) and when they start singing together again you realise what everyone has missed. They've made dozens of excellent records but for some reason I always think this is the one that displays them at their best. Love the intro.

Clip of the Day, July 31st, 2008 - Amy LaVere - Nightingale

My thanks to Workington Reds director Alec Graham for today's choice, especially when he's got enough on his plate responding to the latest inaccurate ramblings of Allerdale officers on the so-called Workington super stadium.

Alec is friendly with Amy LaVere and she is prepared to do a concert in west Cumbria when she tours Britain this autumn. That's a wonderful scoop because in several people's opinion Amy is the next big thing to hit the UK from America.

Getnoticedonline, of course, will be first to give you details of the concert but we can exclusively reveal that negotiations are in hand for Amy to perform in the Kirkgate Centre, Cockermouth.

Clip of the Day, July 30th, 2008 - Timi Yuro - Hurt

You've probably guessed I'm quite a fan of the late, great Timi Yuro. She had a terrific voice and this is probably her best - and one of her biggest hits. She quit the music business altogether after her marriage in 1969. When Yuro began to sing again in the 1980s, her doctors detected throat cancer. Her larynx was eventually removed and in 2004 she died of cancer. Her last recording was the 1984 CD Timi Yuro Sings Willie Nelson, produced by her old friend Nelson.

Clip of the Day, July 29th, 2008 - The Troggs - With A Girl Like You

Now I know the singer was called Reg Presley, but which one was Richard Hannon. In all the publicity blurbs put around about top racehorse trainer Richard Hannon most seem to include the line that he once played with the Troggs - when they were famous, before they broke through? I've always been intrigued. Not that it matters regarding this clip - good pop song!

Clip of the day, July 28th, 2008 - Eddie Cochran-Three steps to heaven

Another of those great performers who died ahead of his time. Not with us long but left some great songs and recordings. This was a big hit and I can remember listening to the charts on Radio Luxembourg when this was riding high. There's one particulargreatest hits album which doesn't have a weak track.

Clip of the day, July 27th, The Fratellis - Chelsea Dagger

The thing about having six kids/grand-kids under the age of 18 is you get the opportunity to hear a fair bit of modern music. Now to be fair there isn't a lot of good stuff about - I can't abide rap and MC (whatever it's called) - but there are still a few jewels to provide an oasis of delight in a sea of mediocrity. This is one of them - they have a very distinctive sound, different, good musically and vocally. I like a lot of what they do. This is one that stands out.
